What are the minimum and maximum digits for an extension number?

What are the minimum and maximum digits for an extension number?

Short answer: By default, extensions are exactly 2 digits — from 10 to 99.
If your organization needs 3-digit or longer extensions, we can enable a custom setup on request.

Why the default is 2 digits

  • Fast, low-error dialing: Short codes reduce misdials and make dial-by-extension quicker.
  • IVR harmony: Two-digit extensions minimize conflicts with IVR menu keys and DTMF timeouts.
  • Simple admin & reporting: A small, fixed range keeps assignment and audits straightforward.

Valid & invalid examples

✅ Valid (2 digits): 10, 21, 45, 99
❌ Invalid: 9 (too short), 007 / 100 (more than 2 digits)

Where to set or change a user’s extension (3 steps)

  1. Open Users → Go to Settings → Users in your MyOperator dashboard.
  2. Select a user → Open the user profile and find Extension.
  3. Assign & Save → Enter a two-digit code (10–99) and Save.

Expected result: The extension appears on the user profile, and dial-by-extension works for teammates.

For external callers, ensure IVR → Menu → Dial-by-Extension is enabled.

Need more digits (3+)?

We support custom ranges (e.g., 100–999) for teams that want department prefixes or large user counts.

  • How to request: Email support@myoperator.co with your desired length (3 or 4) and range.
  • Heads-up: We’ll adjust your dial-by-extension listener to the new length and verify IVR prompts/routing so callers aren’t blocked by timeouts.

Troubleshooting & edge cases

  • “Extension already in use” → Pick a different code; every extension must be unique.
  • “Invalid length” → Enter exactly two digits unless a custom 3+ digit range is enabled for your account.
  • Caller can’t reach by extension → Confirm IVR → Dial-by-Extension is toggled on and the user has a valid extension.
  • Conflicts with IVR keys → Avoid assigning extensions that overlap with single-digit IVR menu choices in prompts (e.g., don’t instruct “press 1” and expect a two-digit extension starting with 1 at the same time).
